Weekend trip: Smøla kayak - Nelvika

Weekend trip from Smøla kayak to Nelvika - Explore the east side of Smøla

Route: Smøla kayak - 13 km - Dyrøya - 7.5 km - Nelvika

Take control of the paddle and set off on a wonderful weekend of paddling along the most open, but perhaps also the sunniest side of Smøla. This route of almost 19 kilometers gives you the feeling of freedom at sea, while at the same time giving you the security of paddling in shallow waters with good opportunities for breaks.

Plan according to nature's terms

When you go on your own, nature is your best guide. A good tip is to check both the wind and tide before starting:

The wind: In a northerly wind you get sunshine in your face, a view of Tustnafjella and a nice tailwind at your back. Be careful with an easterly wind; then the Ramsøyfjord can offer big waves, especially at Bremnesskaret. Stick to the route that goes along the land.

The current: Take advantage of the tide! When the sea rises (flør), the current goes south. If you are going to paddle north, it pays to wait until it goes towards the shore.

The trip step by step

Day 1: From Smøla kayak to Dyrøya

You start the trip from Steinsøysundet. This first stretch towards Lyngværet is well sheltered from waves as long as you stay close to land - then the west wind doesn't bite as much. Although this is the part of the Smøla round with the fewest islets, it is far from a transport stage. You glide over shallow areas with crystal clear water and have several small islands to choose from when your arms need a rest.

Accommodation: Dyrøya - a pearl in the sea

Your destination for the evening is Dyrøya. This is the perfect place for those who thrive in a tent. Between two idyllic sandy beaches lies a lush grassland that is perfect for overnight stays. Here you will also find a ready-made campfire, perfect for preparing today's dinner while enjoying the view.

Day 2: The Sjarmøre stage to Nelvika

After a night out in the open, the journey continues south. The trip ends in the sheltered marina in Nelvika. Here it is easy to go ashore, and you have practical access to both water and parking. The trip can also end in Vikan, which is only 2 km from Dyrøya. You walk up from an inclined plane where they launch boats. It is not possible to park here for too long, but it is fine for pick-up.

Briefly about the trip:

Distance: 18.9 km (total).

Time: Approx. 4 hours of active paddling.

Season: May - September.

Level: Easy, but requires navigation and an understanding of wind/current.
