Smøla around, mini expedition 4 days

Around Smøla in 4 Days: A Safe and Scenic Kayak Expedition with Archipelago Camping

Route: Smøla Kajakk – 18 km – Svanøya – 24 km – Eco Camp Norway – 13 km – Dyrøya – 13 km – Smøla Kajakk

Paddling around Smøla over four days is the most recommended timeframe for those who want to fully experience the nature, tranquility, and coastal culture. The route offers a diverse seascape, ranging from open stretches to narrow sounds and thousands of islets that provide shelter depending on the weather. With tent camping on Svanøya, a comfortable stop at Eco Camp Norway, and a final night on Dyrøya, the trip is divided into manageable stages. This allows plenty of time for breaks, exploration, and relaxing between paddling sessions. The 4-day variant is perfect for paddlers seeking a safer, more flexible journey where enjoyment takes priority over distance.

Wildlife and Landscape
Smøla is home to what is likely the world's densest population of White-tailed Eagles. For paddlers, this offers a unique opportunity to see Northern Europe’s largest bird of prey up close in its natural habitat.

The shallow waters and countless skerries keep larger vessels away, leaving you alone with the horizon and the rhythmic sound of your oars. While the total distance is significant, the sheltered conditions within the archipelago make this an accessible expedition for many when split into several stages.

Route Selection for the 4-Day Trip

Starting your journey with us at Smøla Kajakk ensures expert local advice and secure parking. While most paddlers travel west (counter-clockwise), always check the wind forecast; it often pays to go in the opposite direction to ensure a tailwind.

  • Svanøya (Day 1): Located near Råket, 18 km from Smøla Kajakk. Features a modern lean-to (gapahuk) designed by Biotope, offering excellent shelter from north and northeast winds. Includes a floating dock, outdoor toilet, and fire pit. The shelter sleeps 3–4 people, with great tenting spots nearby and stunning sunset views.

  • Eco Camp Norway (Day 2): A waterfront guesthouse at Straumen. Whether you travel clockwise or counter-clockwise, this is an ideal second stop. You can book a room in advance or set up a tent. Distance: 24 km from Svanøya / 13 km from Dyrøya.

  • Dyrøya (Day 3): A "five-star" natural campsite with a grassy meadow, two beautiful sandy beaches, and fire pits. It’s the perfect spot for a refreshing swim. Distance: 13 km from Smøla Kajakk.

Practical Information and Navigation

  • Season: June to September (Water temp: 12–16°C).

  • Tides: The 2-meter tidal range is a fun challenge. Timing is crucial for the southern passages: Litlstraumen and the Rangnes Currents. (See technical details in the 1-day guide).

  • Insects: Midges (knott) can appear on calm August/September evenings. Stay on the outermost islands or use the indoor shelter at Smøla Kajakk to avoid them. Check for ticks (flått) if camping on islands with sheep.

Highlights

  • The West Archipelago: Named Smyl (crumbs) in Old Norse, the thousands of islets make for a navigational paradise—perfect for map and compass practice.

  • The South Side: Enjoy the view of the Tustnastabban mountains on the horizon.

  • The East Side: Explore the lush beaches and sheltered coves of Dyrøya.

Safety Note: Bremnesskaret and Sundkjeften

Be alert at Bremnesskaret (north of Dyrøya), where northerly winds can create rough seas—stay close to shore. At Sundkjeften, avoid passing during peak high tide if there are heavy waves; wait for the water level to drop slightly.

Accommodation and Supplies
Provisions can be bought at Hopen, Råket, and near the ferry quay. For a comfortable start or end to your trip, we recommend the fishing village of Veiholmen (10 km north of Smøla), specifically Olsens Pensjonat & Gjestehus.
