Guided Tour from Veiholmen

Paddle through the historic fishing village of Veiholmen, surrounded by charming houses and narrow canals. Protected by islets and reefs, the area offers calm waters perfect for kayaking. Navigate through narrow channels and, conditions permitting, paddle out to the lighthouse on the edge of the village.

Your guide will provide basic training in paddling techniques and ensure safety throughout the trip. They will share interesting facts about the area, giving you a deeper understanding of this unique environment. This tour lets you experience the magic of Veiholmen from a unique perspective, creating memories for a lifetime.

What’s Included?

  • Kayak, life jacket, and paddle are included in the price.

  • Our guide will take photos during the trip, which you will receive afterward.

A Safe and Stable Kayaking Experience
We use steady single kayaks, and capsizing is rare. The greatest risk of tipping is when entering or exiting the kayak, but our guide will be there to assist you. We mostly paddle in shallow areas where you can see the seabed, and we are never far from land. Enjoy a safe and pleasant kayak adventure with us!

Veiholmen is often windy, but much of our route is sheltered. If the wind is too strong, the tour will be postponed or canceled for your safety. The months with the least wind are June, July, August, and September. We prioritize your safety to ensure every trip is both enjoyable and secure.

What Should I Bring?

  • Clothing: We recommend a windproof jacket, a neck gaiter (buff), and a light pair of hiking trousers. On warm days, shorts are perfect.

  • Footwear: Crocs, sandals, or going barefoot works best. Normal shoes are possible but will likely get wet.

  • Extras: Bring a change of clothes in a bag (just in case), and some snacks/drinks for our break. Feel free to bring your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery. You will be fairly well-protected from the elements inside the kayak cockpit.

Itinerary

Meeting Point: The guide will meet you at the parking lot, Hotranklakken (the lot located just before Veiholmen Brygge).
Preparation: The guide will go over the planned route, the weather forecast, and the safety plan. We then adjust the kayaks, seats, and pedals to fit you perfectly.
Launch: The kayaks are launched from a floating dock with the guide's assistance. A short instruction in paddling technique is provided once you are on the water.

Through the Canals of Veiholmen
We begin by paddling through the canals of Veiholmen, where you can see the seabed clearly. This is a great place to practice steering before we head into more open waters.

The Breakwater
We paddle to the massive stone breakwater that has protected the village from the Atlantic Ocean since 1930. The guide will share stories about the history of the breakwater and the fishing community.

Test the Atlantic Waves
If the weather allows and you are feeling adventurous, you can test your skills on the open Atlantic waves. Note: This is entirely optional.

Wildlife
Throughout the tour, you are close to wild and beautiful nature. The area is a nesting ground for Arctic Terns, Eider ducks, Oystercatchers, and gulls. Grey Herons and Otters are also frequently spotted during the summer. You may even witness the magnificent White-tailed Eagle in its natural habitat (they are present most of the year, except for July).

Veiholmen Lighthouse (Haugjegla)
On most tours, we head out to Haugjegla Lighthouse, situated on a small island on the outskirts of the village. Here, you can explore the coastal rocks or sit down for coffee and biscuits. This iconic lighthouse stands as a beacon of safety amidst the powerful waves crashing against the rugged rocks. Experience the raw beauty and solitude of this remote spot where the Atlantic meets the sky.

Return to Veiholmen
The tour ends back at our starting point at the parking lot. We take a more direct route back. Upon arrival, you will receive the photos taken during the trip.
