Explore the Realm of the Sea Eagle

Private Guided Kayak Tour with Smøla Kajakk

Join Smøla Kajakk for an unforgettable paddling adventure among islets and reefs. Experience the raw coastal nature, crystal-clear waters, and the chance to see the majestic sea eagle up close.

The tour departs from Smøla Kajakk's paddling camp. Weather conditions and the group’s preferences help determine the route—whether it’s a calm trip in Nordvågen, a more rugged journey around Steinsøya, or a circular route toward Hopen. A common highlight for all these tours is the chance to spot seabirds, especially the white-tailed sea eagle.

Your guide will provide basic paddling instruction and ensure safety throughout the trip, while sharing interesting facts about the area to give you a deeper understanding of this unique environment.

We especially recommend tours on those dead-calm summer evenings. When the sun hangs low, the sky turns pastel, and the clear water lets you watch life beneath your kayak—it's almost like paddling on a glass floor.

What’s Included?

  • Kayak, life jacket (PFD), and paddle are included in the price.

  • Our guide will take photos, which you will receive after the tour.

A Safe and Stable Kayaking Experience
We use stable single kayaks, and capsizing is rare. The greatest risk of tipping is when entering or exiting the kayak, but our guide will be there to assist you. Most of the time, we paddle near the shore where the seabed is visible. The route around Steinsøya is more exposed to the open sea, but we only take this path when the ocean is calm. Even there, we stay close to land for a quick return to safety.

Wind is common on Smøla and dictates our route. If the wind is too strong, the tour will be postponed or cancelled for your safety. The months with the least wind are June, July, August, and September.

What Should I Bring?
We recommend a windproof jacket, a neck gaiter (buff), and Crocs, sandals, or going barefoot. Lightweight hiking trousers work well most days. While shoes are possible, they often get wet. On nice days, shorts are perfect. You will be fairly well-protected from the elements inside the cockpit.

Please bring a change of clothes in a dry bag or plastic bag just in case. We also recommend some biscuits/snacks and something to drink for our break. Feel free to bring your phone or camera to capture the stunning scenery.

Itinerary

The guide will meet you at the Smøla Kajakk camp by the parking lot. We’ll review the planned route and weather forecast before adjusting your kayak, seat, and pedals for a perfect fit. We launch from a sandy beach, and the guide will help you onto the water. Short instructions on paddling technique are provided once we are afloat.

  • Nordvågen: We cross over to Tennskjæret (Tern Skerry), where we might see Arctic terns hunting. Following the coastline toward Nordvågen, we hope to catch a glimpse of the eagle while navigating through various islands before heading north to Gullstranda—a lovely spot for a break and a swim.

  • Test the Atlantic Waves: If weather permits and the group is willing, you can test your skills in the waves outside Sunnkjeften. Here, the swell of the great ocean feels truly powerful. If it is completely calm, a trip around Steinsøya is possible (voluntary). On the outer side of Steinsøya, you are alone with nature and the horizon.

  • Havfiskesenteret: A third option is a circular route toward Hopen and the Sea Fishing Center. This is a varied trip in sheltered waters with fantastic views of the horizon and great chances of seeing eagles scouting from the islets. This route depends on calm conditions at Sunnkjeften.

Return to Base
The tour ends back at the beach at Smøla Kajakk. Upon return, you will receive the photos taken during your adventure.
