FAQ – Smøla Kayak

Do I need a "Våttkort" (paddle pass) to rent a kayak?
We recommend having a Våttkort (basic course or equivalent experience), but it is not an absolute requirement. You can rent a kayak with limited experience if you stay in very sheltered waters and the weather is calm. However, you must be able to swim. When paddling in a group, you should be familiar with assisted rescues. If paddling alone, we strongly recommend that you know how to perform a self-rescue.

What types of kayaks can I rent?
Smøla Kayak rents out sea kayaks equipped with rudders and skegs. We also have one double (tandem) kayak available.

Do I need to book in advance?
We recommend booking in advance, especially during the summer months when both rentals and our summer café are in full swing. Spontaneous rentals are possible, but we cannot guarantee availability.

Where can I paddle nearby?
Smøla Kayak has created paddling routes on UT.no and Morotur.no with suggestions for all skill levels. You can find an overview under our "Trip Suggestions" tab. There are several beautiful trips starting directly from Smøla Kayak.

Is it safe for beginners?
Yes, the areas around Smøla Kayak and Veiholmen are well-sheltered. Note: It is crucial to check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions change rapidly on the west coast of Norway.

What clothes and equipment should I bring?
Dress according to the weather and bring a change of clothes, a warm sweater, a windproof jacket, and a waterproof bag. Drysuits are available for rent if needed.

What is included in the rental price?
The price includes the kayak, paddle, and life jacket (PFD). Additionally, you will receive a briefing on paddling techniques and safety on land, as well as a map review before you set out. If you are paddling alone, an extra paddle and a paddle float are also included.

Do I need to wear a wetsuit or drysuit?
In June, July, August, and September, a drysuit or wetsuit is generally not necessary. It is important to bring a change of clothes and a towel in a dry bag in case of a capsize. We offer drysuit rentals for extra safety or for those paddling outside the main season when temperatures are low. We do not offer wetsuits. While wetsuits are great for swimming, they can be uncomfortable for paddling; a "Long John" style is usually preferred.

Can I have the kayak delivered?
Yes, we can deliver and pick up kayaks and drysuits at your accommodation or an agreed-upon starting point. This can be booked along with your rental.

How much does it cost to rent equipment?

  • Kayak (3 hours): NOK 300 per person.

  • Kayak (12/24 hours): NOK 500 / 600.

  • Kayak (additional days): NOK 400 per day.

  • Drysuit: From NOK 400.

  • We also rent out tents, cooking equipment (with cutlery/plates), sleeping mats, and dry bags. See prices during booking. Sleeping bags are available for purchase.

Where can I paddle, and is there accommodation?
We recommend exploring all of Smøla with its many islands and minimal boat traffic. Popular routes include Veiholmen to Haugjegla Lighthouse and the stretch from Hopen to Veiholmen.

  • West and South: The densest areas of islands. The south side is the most remote and is a protected landscape area.

  • North and West: Offer spectacular summer sunsets.

  • Tidal Currents: For those wanting to experience currents, we recommend the area around Jøa, Rangnes, and the stretch between Jøstølen and Strømmen.

  • Beaches: Beautiful bays and beaches can be found in the Vikan area on the east side.

  • Our Accommodation: We offer a "Paddle Camp" with tent sites (NOK 150 per person) or Lavvo (traditional tent) rentals (NOK 450 per Lavvo). The camp has access to showers, toilets, a shelter with a pizza oven, and a fire pit. For more comfortable options, see opplevsmola.com.

What happens if the weather gets bad?
We assess conditions continuously. If a trip cannot be carried out safely, we will arrange an alternative time or solution. If bad weather hits while you are out, seek shelter on land and wait for it to pass.

Can children join?
Children are welcome as long as conditions are safe. We recommend short trips for children from age 10. Younger children can try paddling in the bay by our base. We always recommend bringing a tow line when paddling with children; this is provided by us.

Can I bring a dog in the kayak?
Yes, it is possible if the dog is used to it and is not too large.

What are the rules for nature conservation?
The Norwegian "Right to Roam" (allemannsretten) applies—show respect for seabirds, nesting prohibitions, and protected areas. Do not rest or camp near nesting birds. It is strictly forbidden to be near eagle nests before May 20th, as the eagles may abandon their chicks. After May 20th, brief stays nearby are allowed, but do not get too close.

What safety equipment is included?
A life jacket is always included. A group will also receive an extra paddle and a tow line. One pump is included. Solo paddlers also get a paddle float. Guided tours include training in basic safety and technique.

Where do I pick up and return the kayak?
Our base is at Holbergsveien 21, 6570 Smøla. For an extra NOK 100 per kayak, you can choose to start and end your trip at Veiholmen.

Can I store valuables safely?
For multi-day trips, we recommend parking at Smøla Kayak. We can look after your keys and valuables.

Do you offer guided tours for beginners?
Yes, our guided group tours require no prior experience. The most popular tour starts from Veiholmen and lasts 2–3 hours. The price is NOK 700 per person (NOK 900 for private groups).
